Trevor Enjoys Thrill of Newfound Speech

February 11, 2016

When Trevor came to Elim, he had limited communication through speech. Not being able to speak with his family, Elim’s staff, or classmates was very frustrating for Trevor. Fortunately, through a lot of hard work by Trevor, his family, and Elim’s teachers and therapists, those days are long past.

Now Trevor can communicate with those around him. Often using an iPad, Trevor can respond to questions and express his wants and needs.

Karen, Trevor’s mother, is so proud of Trevor and thankful for this achievement.  “Speech was always our number one goal for Trevor,” she explains. “Now that Trevor is able to talk, his personality shines through. He loves to joke around and help other kids. He gets upset if a classmate is upset. He has so much empathy for other people.”

Trevor’s teacher, Lee Phillips, loves Trevor’s positivity. “Trevor is a very happy kid who loves to laugh. He brings so much joy to our classroom. He has formed some great friendships! I can’t wait to watch him grow and become all who God wants him to be!

Trevor has also made huge strides in other areas. He’s learned how to write and say his name, and enjoys telling people his age. He happily helps his family vacuum and wash dishes. He is even well-known at his local grocery store where he helps out in the floral department.

At Elim, Trevor has access to many new experiences that help him grow in independence. Trevor is involved with Special Olympic opportunities at Elim. He runs on the cross-country team, swims, and plays volleyball and basketball. Trevor and his family were all so proud to attend Elim’s sports banquet last year where Trevor’s accomplishments were recognized!

Trevor’s family attributes much of his success to the teamwork they’ve found at Elim. Karen explains, “Elim has given Trevor a lot of stability. The staff is caring and compassionate. They have so much positivity and recognize Trevor as the joy that he is! We’ve worked as a team to help Trevor succeed.”
