Transforming Lives at Elim – Raegan Finds Her Voice!

September 2, 2013

At Elim, technology is not an issue of convenience for those we serve – it’s a necessity. Through our assistive technology program, our staff uses technological devices like smart boards, iPads, touch screens, and Dynavox devices to help students communicate.

Raegan joined Elim’s family as an adult several years ago.  Until coming to Elim, Raegan and her mother communicated by shouting letters to each other. These letters signified simple needs, but this code was only understandable to Raegan and her mom. This meant that no one else could understand Raegan’s needs and desires.

Through our Adult Services program, Raegan was paired with a communication device, and she has learned to use her device to communicate in full sentences!  Now Raegan is able to communicate with everyone. She even grocery shops independently in the community, placing her own orders at the deli counter using her communication device! At Elim, we’ve had many children – and even adults – who have joined our family unable to communicate their desires and needs. With these new communication skills, lives are transformed, relationships are strengthened, and independence grows!

The assistive technology program is just one way Elim equips children and adults with the skills they need to achieve their God-given potential. If you’d like to help transform the lives of individuals with disabilities through communication, partner with us today!
