Liz’s Perfect Fit

November 17, 2013

Liz is often referred to as the “Face of Firehouse Subs.” A very happy person, she is responsible for delivering sandwiches to customers with a smile, enthusiastically telling them to “Enjoy your sandwich!”

Liz also assists by cleaning the lobby, stocking the soft drink and chips stations, and even washing dishes. She performs her duties with such ease that you may never know the extensive process involved in training her for her duties.

Elim’s staff walked alongside Liz, encouraging and training her every step of the way. Liz’s job coach, RoseAnn, prepared her for the questions she would be asked in her interview, attended the interview with her, and celebrated with her when she was hired! The next week, this dynamic duo headed to work – together. RoseAnn remained with Liz for the full week it took for her to work independently. Now RoseAnn stays in close contact with Liz’s supervisor and returns periodically to provide additional training.

While this may seem like a complicated process, it’s worth every second! Liz loves her job and has built great relationships with her co-workers and customers. Each person who visits Firehouse Subs witnesses the potential of individuals with disabilities. In addition, Firehouse Subs has gained an upbeat, hardworking employee. Liz’s supervisor has been so proud of her accomplishments that they have even included positive notes in her paychecks to encourage her as she learns!

Every adult in Elim’s Adult Services program has an individual plan to help them grow and succeed. Case managers meet with adults to learn their interests and assess their capabilities to match them with the best daily activities and schedules. Some individuals work within Elim’s workshop assembling HOPE Packs, Military Kits, or other light assembly projects. Currently, 30 of Elim’s 220 adults hold jobs in the community through the Supported Employment program, including childcare, custodial services, and restaurant duties.   Vocational training and support – just one way Elim helps each individual achieve their personal best!

If you want to support Liz and other individuals living with disabilities, stop by our giving page on Tuesday, December 3. Every online gift you make on that day will be doubled by The Coleman Foundation.
