A Letter from Humberto’s Parents

June 23, 2025

Below is a letter written by Humberto’s parents, Jeanette and Humberto Jr. They wanted to share with you the personal impact Elim continues to have on Humberto’s growth.

Before attending Elim, school had always been a challenge for Humberto. At times, he demonstrated aggression towards peers and staff and would engage in self-injurious behaviors. He had difficulty expressing his emotions appropriately and showed little interest in social interactions with his peers. He struggled to follow the classroom routine and would not sit during lessons. This allowed few opportunities for learning, causing Humberto to fall further behind academically. By the time he completed 2nd grade, he could not read and struggled to write legible letters and numbers. Needless to say, we felt defeated and concerned about what the future would look like for our son.

Humberto has been attending Elim for about 3 years, and it has completely changed our lives for the better. The progress he has made in such a short amount of time is phenomenal. We have so much appreciation for the teachers and staff at Elim because they have worked so hard to help Humberto continue to reach his full potential. He is no longer engaging in aggressive or self-injurious behaviors, and he can regulate his emotions by implementing the techniques he has learned. His social interaction with peers has improved, allowing him to take an interest in others and make new friends. Humberto is now reading, writing, and completing math problems independently. Elim provides a safe and nurturing environment that fosters independence and autonomy while providing support when needed. Because of the life skills and community outings Elim implements into their curriculum, Humberto is learning to solve problems, make decisions, and navigate the world around him. Elim has been a godsend, and we are so grateful Humberto gets to experience and attend such an amazing school.

~Humberto Jr. & Jeanette, Humberto’s Parents
