Assistive Technology
Assistive technology is an essential component of enabling education and communication for Elim students. Our certified assistive technology practitioner works with students and teachers to make the best use of technological innovations, including adaptive computer equipment and software solutions. Adaptive computer equipment includes a number of options, including touch screens, track balls, switches, Intellikeys (alternative programmable keyboard), and a variety of software solutions. Many of Elim’s non-verbal children use some of the most powerful augmentative communication devices available today. These dedicated high-tech systems feature dynamic display screens that make communication faster and more natural. Students at Elim have developed their communication significantly through this technology.

Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy
Elim’s therapists are all qualified and experienced in pediatric therapy. They implement the individual minutes indicated in each student’s IEP, providing each student with techniques and equipment for solutions that carry over into classroom, home, and work settings.

Speech Therapy
The speech-language pathologists on Elim’s staff work with teachers to implement individual communication goals. Students are encouraged to develop their skills in a total communication approach, including the use of verbal and non-verbal techniques and augmentative communication systems.

Behavior Management
A behavioral therapist provides services to Elim staff, students, and families, addressing behaviors that interfere with the quality of a student’s education.

Nursing/Health Services
Elim’s full-time nursing staff oversees distribution of medications to students, helps parents evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral and seizure medications, and assesses possible illness or injury.

Counseling
Full-time staff implement the individual minutes indicated on each student’s IEP. They provide counseling for small groups of students who have difficulty with social skills or appropriate expression of emotion. Individual counseling is also available as needed. A parent support group meets monthly during the school year.

Hot Lunches
Students may receive hot lunches, or milk only, for a monthly fee. Meals meet all nutritional requirements; most special diets can be accommodated.
