Curriculum

Individual Educational Plans (IEP)
Each student has an IEP that focuses on preparing the student to live, work, and socialize within the community. Each plan is tailored to meet the specific needs of the student, and is written in accordance to Illinois State standards. Elim offers a full curriculum at all levels.

Summer Session
Elim’s summer session is an extension of the regular school year that provides needed continuity for our students. It runs full days, five days per week, for six weeks.

Adaptive Physical Education
Students benefit from the adaptive physical education program once each week. Elim’s gymnasium has a variety of adaptive equipment to meet the individual needs of the students.

Swimming
Elim students participate weekly in aquatic activities in our heated indoor swimming pool. All pool activities are supervised by a swimming instructor and certified life guard. Additional staff members accompany students in the pool as needed.

Art
Art is one way for children to discover and express their gifts. Elim’s students have various opportunities to explore their artistic talents both within the classroom and the art room.

Music
Students have opportunities to participate in Elim’s choir.

Literacy Center
Elim’s Literacy Center encourages students to engage in literacy activities in ways that are accessible and meaningful to them. It offers a variety of standard and adapted boos, categorized for easy locating and access. Books on CD and tape, as well a books with hands-on materials, are available for students reading at all levels. A SMARTBoard allows interaction with a variety of literacy activities, and computers make the Internet available to students.

Field Trips
Various field trips and community outings are scheduled throughout the year to support the educational experience. Elim owns numerous lift buses and vans, allowing students easier access to the community.

Vocational Training
Elim provides pre-vocational training that includes classroom instruction and some work opportunities for qualified high-school-age students. Under the supervision of vocational education instructors and job coaches, students gain experience in different kinds of work, learn specialized job skills, and develop positive work attitudes.
