In 1969 Elim began serving the population of adults with disabilities with Adult Services, a program where adult clients are brought in from their respective residential locations (whether living with family or in a group home) and given the opportunity to work and perform at a level that fits their skills and talents. Elim Adult Services is certified by:

• Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) in Employment Services; Personal and Social Services; and Community Services
• Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) as a Developmental Training Center
• Illinois Department of Labor
• United States Department of Labor

Providing opportunities to interact with people in the community is an important aspect of Elim’s Adult Services. Individuals are offered opportunities to participate in their community through various training venues, such as shopping, restaurant etiquette, recreation, leisure, cultural enrichment activities, and through volunteering at local non-profit agencies.

Assistive Technology

For many of Elim’s adult clients, a significant barrier to being included in the community is the inability or impairment in communicating. Assistive technology is used to create increased independence for each individual, such as: creating jigs to perform various job-related tasks, using adaptive appliances and utensils to perform grooming, eating, cooking, and laundry skills; and using portable computers programmed to speak for an individual on an interactive level.
