Programs & Services

The Elim Greenhouse, started in September 2002, offers unique opportunities for hundreds of children and adults with disabilities. As a program of Elim’s Adult Services area, it also offers beautiful, top quality flowers and potted plants for the local community. The greenhouse holds many sales but is most active in May, September, and December, when colorful poinsettias are available for the holidays.

The greenhouse offers outdoor learning and education, as well as vocational training for Elim’s students and adults. Our staff has found that participating individuals often report feeling more peaceful and a greater sense of satisfaction after working in the greenhouse. Working in the greenhouse also fosters a sense of independence and boosts the self-esteem of those who spend time planting and pruning within its walls.

Elim’s greenhouse also offers individuals an opportunity to learn and appreciate new skills. Some individuals have transferred their love of gardening, which was discovered through working in Elim’s greenhouse, into a sound vocational choice, and have found gardening-related employment after leaving Elim’s campus.

One client whose life has been transformed at the Elim Greenhouse is Bob Hillegonds. Since the greenhouse opened, Bob’s life has changed dramatically. He now feels like he has a purpose. He loves watering, planting, and caring for the flowers and plants- and getting a paycheck in the process! It seems the greenhouse was a perfect fit. According to a staff member, “Bob is used by God at the greenhouse and Bob knows it. He is proud of the contributions he can make and the responsibility he shows in performing his duties.”
