Residential’s Furry Friend

May 13, 2008

In November, Kamp Cottage welcomed a new friend to the dorm. Harley Elijah, a cute, friendly Shih Tzu puppy became the “dorm dog”. Harley came to us at a mere 2 months old. Full of energy, Harley is a loving little puppy who is super curious, loves to lick and absolutely loves hugs. Each morning, the residents make their way past Dr. Smalls’ office (Harley’s home base), to say good morning, and often Harley gives a good “Woof! back. Whether it’s a short walk around the dorm, giving him water, or just spending time with him in their pods, Harley enjoys being in his home away from home, Kamp Cottage. Parents who visit often make a pit stop to see him as well as many of the staff that come through the residence doors.

Spending time with Harley has also become a great incentive to positive behavior from some of our residents who benefit from clear rewards for good behavior. Its amazing how this little ball of black and white fur can bring such expressions of love out of our children. One resident, who for a long time has been very fearful of dogs, gives the “thumbs up” signal every time she pets or even holds him now. Each day, he reminds us all of how God gives us joy in sometimes very small packages. You can’t help loving the little one, and he has become an instant friend to all that visit the dorm.
