Michael: “I can read because of Elim”

Feb 18, 2010

imageMy name is Michael. I came to Elim 3 years ago because I could not read.
At my old school the kids would use me and make fun of me behind my back. It was really hard. Coming to Elim was hard because I live in Beecher and it’s a long ride to here. But I know that God made me with these struggles and wanted me to be here so that I could learn to be a hard worker and finish the things I start. I know God has a plan for my life.
When I was in Miss Sherry’s class she told me that I was not allowed to sound out words anymore. Sounding out words is very hard for me because I have dyslexia. I learned that my brain needed to be trained to read in a different way. It was really hard work. Sometimes I did not understand what she was trying to do to me. Sometimes I got aggravated. But it worked. I learned a few sight words every week. My first sentence was, “I see a yellow horse.” Now I can read a whole lot of sight words and a lot of books. I can read a lot of the books that used to be too hard for me.
I like to read Green Eggs and Ham to the little kids my mom babysits for. Writing is still hard for me and sometimes people don’t know what I write. Spelling out words is not as easy for me as it is for other people. But it’s getting better every day.
There is a song I learned in Miss Sherry’s class called “I’ll Always Stand for You.” There is a line about how I have felt what it feels like to be rejected. All of us at Elim know what it feels like to be rejected, mostly by people we thought were our friends. But no matter what, Jesus is always there for us. He was rejected by people too and knows how we sometimes feel.
