Learning on the Job!Oct 06, 2009
Each week, 18 of Elim’s ACE students travel to the Alsip Park District Golf Course to use the valuable skills they’ve learned in the ACE vocational workshop in a real-life work setting. At the golf course, Elim’s children with autism work in the banquet room, wiping down tables and chairs, polishing silverware, and providing general cleaning for the facilities. This type of experience is extremely valuable for these special students. Dawn Callahan, Transitions Coordinator for the ACE program explains, “It’s good work experience for them and so important for them to generalize the skills they’ve learned in our vocational workshops. Because they’ve been working there for over a year, it’s a very comfortable environment for them. Often, children with autism feel very anxious in new surroundings so it’s great to have such a comfortable environment for them to practice their skills.” Anne and Mike O’Sullivan not only own the restaurant & banquet facilities located on Alsip’s Golf Course but are parents of an ACE student as well. At the end of each school year, they throw a barbeque for the students to celebrate their accomplishments. Elim’s ACE staff is always looking for ways to get their students involved in their surrounding community. If you have an idea or a business that may offer an opportunity for their involvement, please contact Dawn Callahan at (708)389-0555. |
